Our Aims

The dual aims of the Fort St. Helen Garrison are simple: To educate the public about the history of Canada and Quebec, and to instill a sense of duty and civic pride into today’s youth.

We do this by preserving the memory of the 78th Fraser Highlanders Regiment (1757-1763). Our Regimental story is a window into our shared history; the student squad, proudly named the 78th, serves as a conduit that provides a link between our past and our present. Through living history displays — pipes and drums; muskets and cannons — we involve the public by inviting them to learn by experiencing history, rather than just reading or hearing about it. Our goals, and our activities, are all supported by the renowned research undertaken by members of the Garrison, whose academic work broadens our knowledge of 18th Century Military History.

Taken as a whole, our mandate is to educate the public, while simultaneously creating an environment that promotes discipline and respect among Montreal’s youth. The Garrison supports these goals and programs through various profile and fundraising events.  This has been the goal of the Fort St. Helen Garrison since its inception twenty-five years ago. Now, it has evolved into a tradition: One that we proudly carry forward, year after year, for generations to come.
